Solar Power Lowers Bills

The solar energy project which is about to be started in Morris County is without a shadow of a doubt going to be one which helps to save at least 35 % of the total energy consumed by households collectively.

There was an announcement by officials on the 11th of February 2010 that the schools & agencies which signed up for the renewable/solar energy project in Morris County are going to be saving around 35 % on their energy bills in the coming year and this figure is expected to rise to 40 % maximum by the conclusion of this fifteen year program. Stephen Pearlman, the attorney for the improvement authority of Morris County who are working on the project together with the board of freeholders for the county, said, “It is going to cost them around 10.6 cents for every kilowatt hour that they generate from solar power as opposed to the average of 15 cents which is the cost of generating the same amount of energy from traditional sources. This is a great moment. Today, we see an idea become a reality.”

Tioga Energy from Califronia & SunDurance Energy from South Plainfield have together won a contract worth $22.3 million last December to lead this initiative and are going to be preparing the buildings for the solar panels and upgrading the roofs by June. Solar panels are going to be installed in fourteen public schools and even a few government buildings of the county. The participants in this include, regional school districts from West Morris, Morris Hills, Mountain Lakes, Parsippany, Boonton and the Commission for the Morris Country Park. Christine Johnson, the superintendent of Boonton School feels that they could save aronuf $16,000 during the first year of this plan itself which would be a saving of around 36% in her district. She estimates this figure to go up to at least $25,000 by the fifteenth year of the project. Solar panels are going to be installed in Boonton high school & John Hill & School Street elementary schools. This includes an upgrade worth $100,000 for the roof which is also going to be paid for by the county. Johnson says, “Anything which we could do to let the people know that we are saving money and reducing the consumption of energy is worthwhile.” John Bonanni, the county administrator said, “I expect this county to begin a 2nd round of solar installations & hope that more schools & towns are enticed to participate this time.

Puerto Rico Renewable Law into Legislation

Luis G. Fortuno, the governor of Puerto Rico, has signed into law new renewable energy legislation. The Act for a Public Policy for Energy Diversification Through Sustainable and the Alternative Renewable Energy and Green Energy Incentives Act set specific renewable energy production goals and create economic incentives to facilitate the investments required to meet those goals.

The new law establishes public policy rules to increase and diversify energy generation by requiring the purchase and sale of sustainable and alternative renewable energy. Specifically, it sets a renewable portfolio standard (RPS) of 15% by 2020 and requires retail energy providers to prepare a plan to reach 20% renewable energy production by 2028.

In addition, the measure establishes renewable energy certificates (RECs) as the main financial mechanisms to achieve these goals and validates them as legally recognized assets that can be purchased, sold, traded and transferred separately from electric power. It also provides for the creation of a permanent Renewable Energy Commission, comprised of five ex-officio members and two members named by the governor for a four-year term, one of whom must come from academia.

Furthermore, the governor signed a second law that provides a series of short-, medium- and long-term economic incentives to encourage the creation of a new and solid renewable energy industry. This second law creates a Green Energy Fund (GEF), to be established by the Department of the Treasury as a special, independently administrated fund.

Through this mechanism, the government of Puerto Rico will co-invest $290 million in renewable energy projects and other initiatives over the next 10 years. The GEF initiates with a $20 million injection in 2011. Through the GEF, the Puerto Rico Energy Affairs Administration will offer cash rebates of up to 60% for individuals and 50% for companies for the cost of installing residential and industrial projects not exceeding 1 MW of capacity. The GEF also provides flexibility for the government to establish new investment or incentive programs in the future.

For companies dedicated to the production of renewable energy on a commercial scale, the new Incentive Act also provides tax benefits in the form of significant partial exemptions from income taxes, property taxes and municipal taxes; super-depreciation of buildings, structures, machinery and equipment; and eligibility for tax-credits related to the use of locally manufactured products, job creation, and research and development.

Commercial GeoThermal

Washington, DC, United States -- The U.S. has been harnessing geothermal energy since 1960 and if recently announced research projects and startups are successful, even more commercial geothermal power might soon be available. Federal funding initiatives are hoping to unlock the geothermal energy potential in an innovative new technology known as oil and gas coproduction. Generally oil companies are receptive to the idea of turning a liability into an asset and expanding the economic potential of their oil wells. And why not, since in the past, wastewater from oilfield production processes was viewed as a nuisance byproduct that needed to be disposed of. But new research has shown that much of the 25 billion barrels of this geothermally heated “wastewater” produced at oil wells each year in the U.S. is hot enough to produce electricity. It is estimated that many of the wells might have clean energy capacities of up to 1 MW.

China -largest consumer of energy, China pursues sustainable enrgy?

Print Article - IBTIMES.com: International Business News, Financial News, Market News, Politics, Forex, Commodities - International Business Times: "China has become the largest energy consumer in the world, using 4 percent more than the United States, according preliminary results of the International Energy Agency (IEA).
The IEA reported that in 2009, China consumed 2.252 billion tons of oil equivalent energy, mainly through oil and coal. The United States consumed 2.169 billion tons. Of course, on a per capita basis, China only consumes a third of the OECD average and a fifth of the U.S. figure. In addition, China has disputed IEA's data and assertion that they are now the world's largest energy consumer.

Although no one expected China to remain second place forever, they surpassed the U.S. sooner than most had expected. Indeed, the IEA pointed out that China's energy usage has double since 2000. The IEA said that one reason China surpassed the U.S. in 2009 was because they weathered the global recession better than the U.S."

Florida Legislature rejects pleas for tax breaks - Legislature - MiamiHerald.com: "Legislators rejected calls to lengthen an abbreviated session by taking up an idea to bring economic assistance to the Panhandle.
BY MARY ELLEN KLAS AND CRISTINA SILVA
Herald/Times Tallahassee Bureau
TALLAHASSEE -- When Florida's legislators quickly gaveled in and gaveled out their special session Tuesday, they also walked away from an opportunity to deliver tax breaks and economic relief to businesses struggling in the oil-ravaged regions of the state.
House Speaker Larry Cretul and Senate President Jeff Atwater instead promised to convene meetings over the next month then call themselves back for another special session in late August or early September.
``There is nothing we can do this week to improve the situation more than we could in September,'' Cretul told the House before it voted 67-44 to adjourn."

AFP: Brazil vows to continue clean energy push at summit

AFP: Brazil vows to continue clean energy push at summit: "BRASILIA — Brazil hopes to demonstrate its commitment to renewable energy, which currently provides half the country's power, at a clean energy summit in Washington this week, Energy Minister Marcio Zimmermann said Saturday.
'Brazil is committed to continuing its renewable energy grid and our plans for 2019 and 2030 maintain that characteristic,' Zimmermann told AFP in an interview.
Energy ministers or senior officials from 21 major economies -- who together account for 80 percent of the world's gross domestic product -- will gather Monday and Tuesday in Washington at the initiative President Barack Obama's administration, which has made the creation of green jobs a top priority.
Brazil can 'share its experience because there are many developing countries in South America and Africa that have the same resources and conditions as us, and can exploit them in the same manner,' Zimmermann said.
More than 80 percent of Brazil's electric power comes from hydroelectric technology, and the country is also a leader in bioethanol production using cane sugar.
Environmental groups however continue to protest Brazil's approach to water use, arguing that the country should build smaller hydroelectric plants, rather than giant facilities that require unnatural flooding.
A Brazilian plan to construct a giant hydroelectric dam that would require the flooding of large areas in the Amazon rainforest has attracted international controversy."

Solar Energy Market Growth Even Hotter in 2010

What a difference a year makes in solar energy market growth. Last July, solar panel makers and their suppliers were feeling the strong jab of the recession and wondered whether the young solar industry could survive this downturn. Then, unexpectedly strong demand in Germany and the rest of Europe pulled solar manufacturers out of their decline. In fact, global solar panel shipment in the second quarter of 2010 is up 92% from a year ago, according to a report released by IMS Research Monday.

"Property owners are telling us they are tired of endless rate hikes, fossil fuel pollution & propaganda, as well as, funding terrorists & wars to protect supplies," says Ken Boyle, SolarFusionCorp Vice President

American solar panel makers have seen a surge in sales with the recent solar energy market growth.  IMS has forecast that 14.6 gigawatts of solar electricity generation capacities will likely be added worldwide this year, almost doubling the capacity added in 2009.  "All the suppliers are producing near their maximum capacities, and they are expanding quickly this year," says Sam Wilkinson, an analyst at IMS.

Solar energy projects built in Germany could account for 47% of the global installations in 2010, IMS says. The U.S. could take up 8% of the same pie, Wilkinson says.

Several research firms made 2009 projections that didn't resemble the actual production and installation statistics. But many of them are certain that this year will a blockbuster one for the industry. Back in April, Photon Consulting was projecting, 24.4 gigawatts of new installations globally for 2010. Solarbuzz, meanwhile, is forecasting 15.2 gigawatts.

That sense of optimism certainly has showed up in investments into solar technologies: They grabbed the most dollars from private-equity firms during the second quarter of this year.

The Energy Fight Coming to the Senate : Greentech Media

The Energy Fight Coming to the Senate : Greentech Media: "This is such an important time for the industry,' was the first thing said to me by Acciona Energy North America CFO Susan Nickey, who was fresh from meetings in Washington, D.C.
It's an important time because the Gulf oil spill has revived hope for the once lost-cause energy-climate legislation -- and because the renewable energy industries are desperately in need of such legislation.
After sustaining growth in 2009, some of the renewables' most important incentives are set to expire at the end of this year. Nickey's meetings with Republicans have revealed that there are Republican votes for new legislation."

Concerned Citizens: Don't Play Games With Energy | Sunshine State News

Concerned Citizens: Don't Play Games With Energy Sunshine State News: "After business executives, deal-makers, politicians and academics had their say at the Florida Energy Summit last week, rank-and-file Floridians spoke out. Many weren't impressed.

Concerns ranged from the state's failure to pay promised solar rebates to consumers, to fears that proposed renewable-energy legislation will be tailored to big investor-owned utilities at the expense of small competitors and the public at large.

Questioning the motives of 'Citizens for Clean Energy,' which hosted Thursday's forum in Orlando, Steve Brodkin said, 'They're not a citizens group at all, but a developer ploy to advance the Kitson project and a cover to gain support for the city of Babcock Ranch.'"

Solar Power in U.S. Homes Saves Money in the Short Term, Too

Solar Power in U.S. Homes Saves Money in the Short Term, Too
Solar power is inching closer to the mainstream, with more U.S. households replacing conventional electric service with home-based solar electricity systems. The American Solar Energy Society and the society's magazine, Solar Today, say that solar energy is becoming more of a presence in single-family homes, and beginning to challenge fossil-fuel-generated power, especially on the basis of cost. The ASES' stats show that in 2009, residential-grid-connected photovoltaic, or PV, installations grew 40 percent in the U.S. to 435 megawatts (or MWs as they are referred to in the solar energy world). Doing some quick math here, the typical size for a residential installation is about 2.5 kilowatts. Divide that into 435 MW and the result is 170,000 homes now equipped with solar arrays.

Time is not on our side and is running out for Gov. Crist

Public News Service: "TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Time is running out for Gov. Charlie Crist to call a special session of the Florida Legislature to consider a constitutional amendment banning oil drilling near Florida beaches. Some Republicans, who oppose the amendment, support the idea of a special session to also consider tax relief for those affected by the oil spill.

The Florida Wildlife Federation is the organization that first proposed the amendment. Its president, Manley Fuller, says the Legislature must vote by August 3 to put a drilling ban for state waters on the November ballot."

5 things to know about fed and state energy rebate programs - Jul. 6, 2010

5 things to know about fed and state energy rebate programs - Jul. 6, 2010: ".
Federal appliance rebates are going fast ...
The government's Cash for Appliances program, which lets you score rebates for about $50 to $500 swapping energy guzzling appliances for more efficient models, has gotten lots of attention.
But don't count your greenbacks just yet. The incentives, which are administered through the states, are typically doled out on a first-come, first-served basis, and in many locales the money is already gone. Florida's program, for example, closed just 36 hours after it opened. But some states, such as Michigan, still had plenty of cash in their coffers at the end of May, and other initiatives didn't launch until June. To check the status of the program in your state, go to energysavers.gov/financial."

Solar rebates on hold, leaving homeowners holding the bag

Solar rebates on hold, leaving homeowners holding the bag: "TAMPA - So you missed last week's deadline to get a rebate on a new solar energy system or water heater?
Don't worry about it. The people who made the deadline aren't getting any money either, at least not for a while.
Florida's four-year-old solar rebate program ran out of money last year. But the program wasn't set to end until June 30, so the state kept the offer going. Now it has a list of about 11,200 unpaid claims.
Not all of those have been reviewed and approved, but the ones that have amount to $14.4 million, said Rob Vickers, director of the Florida Energy and Climate Commission, which runs the program.
All 11,200 represent $41.6 million in rebates that homeowners are expecting to receive."

Obama awards $2B for solar power, hails new jobs - Business - Oil & energy - msnbc.com

Obama awards $2B for solar power, hails new jobs - Business - Oil & energy - msnbc.com: "WASHINGTON — The U.S. government is handing out nearly $2 billion for new solar plants that President Barack Obama says will create thousands of jobs and increase the use of renewable energy sources.
Obama announced the initiative in his weekly radio and online address Saturday, saying the money is part of his plan to bring new industries to the U.S.
'We're going to keep competing aggressively to make sure the jobs and industries of the future are taking root right here in America,' Obama said.
The two companies that will receive the money from the president's $862 billion economic stimulus are Abengoa Solar, which will build one of the world's largest solar plants in Arizona, creating 1,600 construction jobs; and Abound Solar Manufacturing, which is building plants in Colorado and Indiana. The Obama administration says those projects will create more than 2,000 construction jobs and 1,500 permanent jobs.
Obama's announcement came a day after the Labor Department reported that employers slashed payrolls last month for the first time in six months, driven by the expected end of 225,000 temporary census jobs. Meanwhile, private-sector hiring rose by 83,000 workers.
The unemployment rate dropped to 9.5 percent."

FPL waits for OK to build solar facility - Gulf Oil Spill Coverage - BradentonHerald.com

PARRISH — When a new solar energy center opened last fall in DeSoto County, President Barack Obama was there to help christen it.
A similar facility has been proposed on Florida Power & Light property near Parrish, but it may be a while before invitations go out to the White House for its debut.
Although the Manatee County Commission recently approved land-use changes that could help advance plans for the county’s first large-scale commercial solar energy facility, FPL spokeswoman Jackie Anderson cautioned that the company awaits legislative changes that support expansion of solar facilities before it decides whether it should build here or not. Installing a solar power system at home can be a good investment - chicagotribune.com

Solar power: Installing a solar power system at home can be a good investment - chicagotribune.com: "His gas use has dropped more than 50 percent, and his electricity use has dropped about 70 percent. He sells extra power back to the electricity grid and sells renewable energy credits, which investors buy and trade to support renewable energy projects.

His return on his investment is about 3 or 4 percent a year.

'Some people say that's a slow return,' he said. 'But I'm willing to bet utility costs are not going down in the next 10 or 15 years. There's very little risk. I'm glad I made the investment.'"
